Messerschmitt Bf 109 H Historia jednego myśliwca
The high-altitude variant of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was one of the Luftwaffe's most ambitious, yet least-known, projects. Faced with the growing threat of Allied air raids—especially incoming B-29 bombers—the Germans began work on a fighter capable of operating at altitudes exceeding 13,000–15,000 meters. This was the birth of the Bf 109H project, developed in parallel with the unsuccessful Me 209. In this article, I discuss the development of subsequent prototypes, the modifications made to the classic Bf 109F, why the designers decided to lengthen the fuselage and enlarge the center wing, and the performance of the DB 628 engine at high altitudes. You'll also see why the project was ultimately considered a dead end and how it was later replaced by the Focke-Wulf Ta 152H. In the film, I discuss, among other things: the origins of the Bf 109 high-altitude fighter, its competition with the Me 209 and Me 209 "Project 1091a," tests of the V50, V54, and V55 prototypes, the performance of the DB 628 and DB 605B engines, design problems, including wing vibrations and a crash at 800 km/h, the impact of Allied bombing on the project's development, why the Bf 109H never entered service. This is a story about the ambition, haste, and desperation of the German aircraft industry in the final years of the war—and how close it came to seeing a completely different high-altitude fighter in the skies.
