The last plane to escape from burning Warsaw. September 1939, the besieged capital, and a single, fully operational PZL.46 Sum, the most modern Polish reconnaissance and bomber aircraft, designed by engineer Stanisław Prauss as a successor to the PZL.23 Karaś. The military ordered as many as 300 of these aircraft, but the war meant that only this single prototype saw combat. In this film, I tell its entire extraordinary story: from the golden age of Polish aviation in the 1930s and Zygmunt Puławski's Seagull, through the dramatic escape from bombed Warsaw and internment in Romania, to the daring flight of pilot Stanisław Riess, who on September 26, 1939, brought Major Edmund Galinat to the besieged city, and the order that gave birth to the Service for Poland's Victory, the beginning of the Polish Underground State. You'll see how this nearly defenseless prototype evaded Messerschmitt, how it was intercepted by a pair of Lithuanian Dewoitine D.501L fighters and forced to land in Kaunas, and the subsequent fate of the crew, the Sum himself, and its brilliant designer, who, in exile, co-created the world's first jet passenger plane.
