MS.406 francuski kamaleon - historia jednego myśliwca
MS.406 – The French Chameleon of World War II 🇫🇷 Could a French fighter from the late 1930s have been one of the best aircraft of World War II? Many historians and aviation enthusiasts argue that it could – provided the war had broken out two or three years earlier. The Morane-Saulnier MS.406 is one of the most underrated and simultaneously most interesting fighter aircraft of the period. Nicknamed "the chameleon" by German pilots due to its vast number of very similar versions and variants, it had enormous modernization potential, which, unfortunately, was never fully exploited by France. In this article, I detail the history of this aircraft – from the competition for a new fighter in 1934, through the turbulent development of prototypes, series production, to its combat service and remarkable fate abroad. What is this episode about? The Origins of the Competition for a Modern French Fighter and the Birth of the MS.406 Development Problems, Prototype Crashes, and Production Difficulties All Major Variants and Modernizations (MS.410, MS.407, MS.408, MS.409, MS.411, MS.420, MS.450, MS.460, and More) Combat Service Over France in 1940 – Successes, Failures, and Tragic Realities Exports and Foreign Career: Finland (including the legendary Morko Morane), Switzerland (D-3800 and D-3801), Turkey, Lithuania, and Other Countries Why Such a Promising Aircraft Lost to History and Newer Designs Technical Data, Armament, and Performance of the Basic MS.406C1 The MS.406 is a story of great French potential squandered by poor decisions, delays, and bad luck. A plane that fought on both sides of the front and was given a second life in the hands of the Finns and the Swiss. If you enjoy stories of aircraft that "almost were great," this episode is for you.
