The year after the liberation of the Alcázar of Toledo in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, the Nationalist Army crossed the Tagus River in May 1937 and attacked the cigarrals of the imperial city, staging a spectacular advance toward Argés. However, very few knew that the Republican Army, led by General Vicente Rojo, was preparing a major counteroffensive, not only to expel their rivals from the ground they had won, but also with a view to recapturing Toledo itself.
