The Laurenzi ore roasting plant is one of the most impressive industrial monuments in Styria, yet it is almost forgotten today. At the foot of the Erzberg mountain, a facility was built in the 19th century that played a central role in European iron production. Constructed between 1844 and 1847, the ore from the Erzberg was roasted here – a crucial step before it could be processed into iron in the blast furnaces. 🔥 But what exactly happened here? In a process called roasting, the ore was heated to high temperatures to remove sulfur and other impurities. This made it lighter, more porous, and more efficient to process further. Without this process, the industrialization of the region would hardly have been possible. In the 19th century, Styria experienced a tremendous economic boom under the influence of Archduke Johann. Towns like Vordernberg developed into important centers of iron processing. Several blast furnaces operated simultaneously, fueled by roasted ore from plants such as the Laurenzi Roasting Works. 👷‍♂️ But progress also came at a price: The work was hard, dangerous, and characterized by heat and smoke. Generations of workers lived off the ore and iron. 📉 Towards the end of the 19th century, change came: New technologies and economic changes rendered many plants obsolete. In 1889, the Laurenzi ore roasting plant was shut down and the fire went out. 🌿 Today, the site is an impressive ruin and a silent monument to industrial history.
