Pernegg Castle in Styria is one of the oldest castle ruins in Austria and was first mentioned in 1143. For centuries it was an important seat of power before becoming associated with raids and power struggles in the late Middle Ages. Wilhelm von Pernegg is particularly well-known; he was captured in 1525 and later died in custody. With the extinction of the family in 1543, the castle began to fall into disrepair.
