Eine Tour durch Köln um 1400 (K.I. Rekonstruktion)

Hi, I'm Tom – and today I'm taking you to one of the largest and wealthiest cities in medieval Europe: Cologne in the year 1400. ☘️ Support the channel here: https://ko-fi.com/tomszeitreisen ❤️ In this video, we'll spend a whole day exploring the city. From the first light in the narrow streets of the residential quarters, through the bustling Haymarket, down to the Rhine, where goods from all over Europe arrive. We'll stand before the unfinished cathedral, witness the work of the craftsmen, encounter merchants, pilgrims, and councilors – and follow the rhythm of a city that never stands still. Around 1400, Cologne was a center of trade, power, and religion. As part of the Hanseatic League, its connections stretched from London to Novgorod. The Rhine brought goods, wealth, and people to the city. At the same time, the cathedral dominated the cityscape – not as a finished structure, but as a massive construction site that had been growing for generations. But Cologne was not a monolithic world. While wealthy fur-trimmed merchants stroll through the markets and political decisions are made in the town hall, dockworkers, craftsmen, and traders toil daily for their livelihoods. The city is dense, noisy, and often dirty—but also full of structure, order, and economic dynamism. This reconstruction is based on a combination of AI-powered visual representation, historical city views and written sources, archaeological findings on medieval urban development, and modern research on the economy, society, and daily life in late medieval Cologne. Note on the presentation: Some of the images shown in this video were reconstructed using artificial intelligence. For many scenes, no direct contemporary visual sources exist, such as paintings, engravings, or archaeologically verifiable views. The visual representations are therefore approximations and not exact 1:1 depictions of historical reality. The aim is to convey the most plausible and detailed picture possible of the respective era, based on archaeological finds, written records, and modern historical research. Different sources may contradict each other on certain points; the reconstruction is based on a comparison of this information. Furthermore, current AI technology still has limitations. Therefore, inaccurate details, anachronisms, or visual discrepancies may occur in individual scenes that do not correspond to historical reality. The spoken content of this video, however, is consistently based on the current state of research. Known errors in this video: Anachronistic drainpipes Cologne Cathedral is somewhat too far advanced in its construction for 1400 Windows partly with leaded glass or modern glass panes—oiled linen would be correct for simple buildings Cobblestones in streets and alleys—not historically documented for Cologne in 1400; dark dirt roads would usually be correct Occasionally, half-timbered facades are too regular and too clean Anachronistic wall lanterns and wall candle holders 💬 Now I'm interested in your opinion: What surprised you the most? The trade on the Rhine? The social order in the market? Or the unfinished cathedral in the heart of the city?
