Rescued A 58ft Hatteras from Where a Yacht Has No Business Being!!! | Grounding 58ft Hatteras

This afternoon I received a call for a 58ft Hatteras that was aground up by Bradenton Beach. Now the original dispatch didn’t have coordinates, so I was thinking they were in the anchorage just south of the marina and had dragged their anchor with the high winds and got stuck on the sandbar there. Well, when I called them, they were able to eventually send me coordinates, and they were just north of the North Coquina Boat Ramp. I knew it was pretty shallow over there, so I was surprised they got as far as they did (still thinking they dragged anchor from the anchorage). When I get up there and turn off from the ICW towards them, I start paying attention to my depth finder, knowing that I’ll probably have to come back this way. It starts out fine at around 10ft and quickly starts dropping to around 4ft and then gets as low as 2-3ft in a couple of places. When I got there, I asked how they got to where they were, and they said they took the channel from Longboat Pass (they took the North Coquina Boat Ramp channel), which I was super surprised about since they said they draft 5ft, and I’ve run aground coming through that channel before. Anyways, we decide that’s the best way out, since they won't make it the way I came, so I attach a line to their stern and pull them backwards and let the wind spin them around to face the direction they need to go, and proceed to follow them back out the way they came, fully expecting them to get stuck again. Somehow, they managed not to get stuck on the way out, and after showing them the channel they needed to follow to continue on their journey north, I sent them on their way. A 58-foot Hatteras. A beautiful, powerful, expensive machine of a boat. Drawing 5 feet of water. Five. Feet. Now let me paint you another picture. The North Coquina Boat Ramp channel. So shallow that I — a person whose entire job is knowing where the water is — have personally run aground in it. A channel that regularly reads 2 to 3 feet in spots. A channel you can practically step out and walk through at low tide. These two pictures should never be in the same painting. And yet. Here we are. The call comes in: big Hatteras aground near Bradenton Beach. No coordinates yet, but I'm already writing the story in my head — anchor drag from the anchorage, high winds, sandbar, totally standard. I already knew the punchline. I did not know the punchline. They send me coordinates and I stare at my screen for a moment longer than is probably professional. North of the North Coquina Boat Ramp. I head over, watching my depth finder the entire time like it owes me money. Ten feet. Eight. Four. A very personally offensive 2.5 feet that I felt in my soul. On a boat significantly smaller than the one I'm going to rescue. I get there. I look at this enormous boat sitting in water it has absolutely no right to be in. I ask the question. "So… how'd you end up here?" "Oh, we came through the channel from Longboat Pass." The channel. Where I have personally beached my own, much smaller boat. They came through it. In a 58-footer. Drawing five feet. I am a professional, so what I said was: "Okay, let's figure out how to get you out." What I was thinking was not that. We hook a line to their stern, the wind slowly rotates an enormous boat around to face the right direction — picture a 58-foot weather vane — and then I follow them back out through the shallow channel, fully, completely prepared to watch this go badly. Reader, it did not go badly. They glided through. Clean. Like the water just decided, you know what, sure, today we're letting this one through. Some boats live charmed lives. This was apparently one of them. 🔔 Subscribe — new videos every week, and the stories only get weirder. 💬 Drop your best "how did THAT boat get THERE" story in the comments. 🚤 Judgment-free zone.
