Other than the fact I hate going to that marina because there’s almost always a problem with the marina answering the phone, having the space available they said they would, or even being able to get to the spot they want us…it was supposed to be a relatively easy tow paying a good amount of money because insurance got involved due to a mishap they had the day before coming in through Big Pass. As any locals know, and most of you from watching my videos should know by now, Big Pass can be kinda sketchy for a boat with any sort of draft on a good day, and downright dangerous on a high wind day, especially if you don’t know the waters. Well, this couple found that out the hard way. As they were coming in through the south side on a day with Northwest winds exceeding 25kts, they hit bottom and ended up getting pushed onto the northwest tip of Siesta Key, where they got bashed around for over 90 minutes while they made a call to the coast guard, who ended up calling the other towing company to go pull them free. Not sure why we didn’t get the call since they were our members and had Geico hull insurance (our parent company), but I digress. Anyways, the tow goes without any trouble until, you guessed it, we get to Bradenton Beach Marina and go to put the boat where we were told to (the haul out slip). Thankfully, my boss had come down with my main boat after a fresh interior paint job and an engine service so we could swap it for the Prokat I was running and went ahead to check to make sure the spot was open. As you’ve probably guessed already, it wasn’t, but there was a spot open on the other side of the fairway going in, so after trying to contact the marina to no avail, I swapped hip tow sides, and proceeded to put the boat in the one open spot. However, right as I was getting ready to untie, one of the dock staff comes walking down the dock and told me to move the boat to the haul out. I told him there’s no room, and the lift isn’t set for us, and he says they’ll get it set. Well, WTF didn’t you do that before we got here? My boss comes down with the freshly serviced main boat so we can swap, heads ahead to check on the slip. Tow itself goes smooth as glass. I'm almost in a good mood. Then I get to Bradenton Beach. The haul-out slip they told us to use — the one they've known about since the night before — is occupied.
