Waverley Merrymaker Class 50 37s and 57s at Carlisle Plus 90s! 18 July 2026

On a hot Saturday, mostly at Carlisle but in the evening at Haltwhistle. Although originally planned to be hauled by a Peak and a Class 40, LSL's Waverley Merrymaker was hauled by D400, the class 50, and the pair of black class 37s! It will return via Newcastle, the Tyne Valley and turn onto the WCML from London Road junction, hence catching it a atmospheric and well kept Haltwhistle station with its historic old signal box (used as an office). At lunchtime, the Northern Belle Settle & Carlisle Special, without steam due to the ban,arrived with class 57s. It headed off to Upperby for servicing and turning. It returned to the station to head for Skipton via Carnforth, Skipton, Woodlesford, York, Woodlesford and finally to Skipton to ensure all passengers got the same length of journey! A decent amount of freight today with Class 90s and 88s. Summer tends to see fewer containers heading to and from Scotland.
