🚂 Severn Valley Railway | Kidderminster | Steam & Diesel Action | 7714, D8568, D1062 & 813 | July 2026 Join me for a fantastic day at Kidderminster Station on the Severn Valley Railway, where we enjoy a busy Timetable C featuring a mixture of steam and diesel traction. During this visit we see the following departures from Kidderminster: 🚂 10:15 – GWR 5700 Class Pannier Tank No. 7714 🚆 10:55 – BR Class 17 ‘Clayton’ D8568 🚆 11:45 – BR Class 52 ‘Western Courier’ D1062 🚂 12:40 – GWR Saddle Tank No. 813 (working this service instead of Class 14 D9551) We also see the 10:45 arrival from Bridgnorth, hauled by GWR Saddle Tank No. 813, before it later forms the 12:40 departure from Kidderminster. As an added bonus, we watch one of the heritage coaches being turned on the Kidderminster turntable after being brought out of the carriage sheds—a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes operation of the railway. Featured Locomotives 🚂 GWR 5700 Class Pannier Tank No. 7714 (Built 1930) Built by Kerr Stuart in 1930, 7714 is one of the famous GWR 5700 Class pannier tanks. Designed by Charles Collett for shunting, freight and passenger duties, it has become one of the Severn Valley Railway’s most reliable and well-loved steam locomotives, returning to service in 2024 following maintenance. 🚆 BR Class 17 ‘Clayton’ D8568 (Built 1964) Built by the Clayton Equipment Company in 1964, D8568 is the only surviving Class 17 ‘Clayton’ from the 117 locomotives built for British Rail’s Scottish Region. Originally allocated to Haymarket before moving to Polmadie, the class was mainly used on freight services and was often operated in pairs due to its modest 900hp output. Withdrawn after only eight years in BR service, D8568 survived through industrial use before being preserved by the Diesel Traction Group. Today it carries a striking BR blue livery with half-yellow warning panels—a “what might have been” appearance, imagining how the class may have looked had it remained in BR service for longer. 🚆 BR Class 52 ‘Western Courier’ D1062 (Built 1963) Built at Crewe Works in 1963, D1062 is one of the iconic Western diesel-hydraulics. After travelling over one million miles during its BR career, it was preserved by the Western Locomotive Association and remains one of the highlights of diesel events on the Severn Valley Railway. 🚂 GWR Saddle Tank No. 813 (Built 1900) Originally built by Hudswell Clarke for the Port Talbot Railway in 1900, 813 is the oldest operational locomotive on the Severn Valley Railway. Now over 125 years old, this unique saddle tank continues to haul passenger trains following extensive restoration and the fitting of a brand-new saddle tank in 2025. The Severn Valley Railway runs between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, calling at Bewdley, Arley, Highley and Hampton Loade. Visitors can also enjoy The Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley, home to historic locomotives, the famous blue engine “Gordon”, King George VI’s royal carriage, a café, gift shop and family attractions.
