Why Australia Can't Build Anything Anymore
There is a house in Melbourne's outer west that has been half-finished for over a year. The frame is up, the roof trusses are in, but the windows are still empty. The family who paid for it is still renting — trapped making repayments on a home they cannot even enter. Their builder went bust, joining more than 3,000 Australian construction firms that collapsed this past year. In 1947, Australia faced a housing crisis. The government's solution was direct: pick up the tools and build. State housing commissions became some of the largest construction operations in the country. They hired tradespeople directly, bought materials in bulk, and standardised designs. It worked. Then we dismantled the machine. State commissions were wound down. Apprenticeships collapsed by 25 percent. The workforce bled out to mining jobs. Today, nearly half of all construction vacancies go unfilled. The industry needs 90,000 workers right now — and the pipeline is shrinking. Australia promised 1.2 million homes by 2029. In year one, we built 174,000. No state is on track. The gap isn't closing. It's getting wider. THE HIDDEN CROWN explores the systems behind Australia's biggest challenges. #housing #housingcrisis #australianhousing #construction #australiadocumentary
