500,000 Melbourne Adult TRAPPED Living With Parents — Can't Rent, Can't Buy
More than half of young Australian men and nearly half of young women in their twenties are still living with mum and dad. And here in Victoria, it's worse than anywhere else in the country. This isn't a "failure to launch" story. These are full-time workers, on real incomes, doing everything right — and still hitting a wall. One bloke posted that he knows loads of mates over thirty earning six figures who are still sleeping in their childhood bedrooms — and he's about to join them. Another saved $150,000 for a deposit — a genuinely huge pile of money — sat down with the numbers, and realised it still wasn't enough to buy anywhere near the city. And one renter described paying more each month in rent than a mortgage repayment would cost — but still unable to save the deposit to get the loan. Yeah, nah — the system is cooked. The rent eats the deposit. The deposit keeps moving. The door stays shut. It now takes half a typical household's entire income just to service a new mortgage — and over eleven years of saving to scrape together a 20% deposit. Over the past 25 years, Australian incomes roughly doubled. House prices quintupled. Wages walking. Prices sprinting. And the rental market is a blood sport on top of it all — one Melbourne renter asked completely seriously whether 30 rejected applications was normal. A Brunswick inspection queue went viral earlier this year because the line of hopefuls stretched right down the street. The maths doesn't maths, mate. And while this generation waits, tens of thousands of Melbourne homes sit completely empty — water meters showing zero usage for an entire year. Empty homes on one side of the city. Locked-out generation on the other. They never meet. 🔔 Subscribe to Aussie Explained — new video everyday on what's actually happening to Melbourne and Victoria's property market.
