Why 90% of New Homes in Victoria Are Garbage (The Builder SCAM Exposed)

Tony and Mandy spent over $1 million building their dream home. Independent assessors found $900,000 worth of defects inside it. Nine hundred thousand dollars. On a one million dollar build. And mate, they are not an outlier... 86% of new Australian homeowners are now calling a tradie back to fix something within months of moving in. AHURI's peer-reviewed research confirms 70% of Australian households report one or more major building problems. UNSW confirmed 85% of apartments built since 2000 contain defects. And a builder posting publicly on Reddit t confirmed the whole rotten incentive structure in one line: "Most builders are barely scraping by and a few bad jobs away from liquidation — so it's in their best interest to get jobs done as quick and rough as possible." Yeah, nah. Absolutely cooked. And when Melbourne homeowners complained? The Victorian Building Authority — the regulator legally required to protect them — was calling distressed owners "emotional" and "stirring up trouble" in its own internal documents. The Victorian Ombudsman then tabled a report in Parliament confirming that homeowners dealing with VMIA — the builder insurance scheme — said it was worse than losing their home. Mate, the safety net was the problem. Then, the Federal Government froze the National Construction Code reforms that would have lifted minimum waterproofing standards until 2029. Waterproofing is the single most common defect category in Australia. They knew. They froze it anyway. Victoria already had 3,596 builder collapses in FY2025 the worst on record with 1,051 right here in Victoria. The maths doesn't maths, mate. 🔔 Subscribe to Aussie Explained — new video every week on what's actually happening to Melbourne and Victoria's property market.
