ТОБА 74 000 лет назад! Вулкан, который чуть не уничтожил Человечество
What happened to humanity 74,000 years ago — and why has science stopped being certain about it? The Toba eruption around 74,000 years ago is the largest volcanic event of the Quaternary period. According to the hypothesis of paleoanthropologist Stanley Ambrose (1998), this eruption triggered a volcanic winter that nearly wiped out Homo sapiens and left all of modern humanity as descendants of just a few thousand survivors. This phenomenon is known as the human population bottleneck, and it can indeed be read in modern genomes. But after twenty years, the volcanic winter hypothesis collapsed under its own evidence. Analysis of cores from Lake Malawi (Lane et al., 2013) found no traces of global cooling. Excavations at Jwalapuram, India (Petraglia et al., 2007) uncovered stone tools above and below the Toba ash layer — without interruption. The Pinnacle Point site in South Africa showed continuous human activity across the chronological horizon of ~74 ka. The bottleneck in human evolution did happen. What exactly caused it — the supervolcanic eruption, climate change, the exodus from Africa, competition with other species of the genus Homo — science in 2026 does not know.
