Water Crisis | Vredendal residents in Western Cape without water due to maintenance

About 35 000 people in the towns of Vredendal and Van Rhynsdorp in the Matzikama municipality of the Western Cape are without drinking water. This is while critical maintenance is under way on a century-old canal that delivers water to the municipality. An urgent call for assistance was made to aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, as water supply is only expected to be available again by the weekend. As part of the Lower Olifants River Water Users Association water management, the canal is opened for restricted periods to allow the towns of Vredendal and Van Rhynsdorp to fill its dams. But pump breakages during the water delivery time resulted in its dams being nearly empty. SABC News' Mariska Botha visited the area.
