According to the organisation, many communities have raised concerns for years about immigration enforcement, border security, unemployment, crime, and pressure on public services. The organisation says it believes these concerns have not been addressed adequately and has urged government to respond more decisively. Traditional leaders also argue that their constitutional role in representing rural communities has been diminished over time. They say they have repeatedly called for greater recognition of their role in governance and for stronger consultation on issues affecting the communities they serve. The organisation further states that it has previously called on government to strengthen enforcement of immigration laws and that it now welcomes the opportunity for engagement as government seeks dialogue with various stakeholders ahead of the planned demonstrations. Government, for its part, has said it remains committed to engaging stakeholders and addressing immigration and border management challenges through lawful and constitutional processes.
