Racing European Cross Country 2024 | Episode 9

Five years later, I’ve found myself back at the European Cross Country Championships—a competition I’ve always loved and enjoyed. This year, however, it felt more like a bonus to be at the championships, compared to previous years when it would have been my sole focus for the winter. In the weeks leading up to the event, training was starting to click, and the Tuesday before race day, I had my best session of the season. Unfortunately, I picked up a slight illness afterward, which cleared quickly but may have left me feeling flat on race day. We can all find excuses, but these are the championships where you want to perform, and I’ve built a reputation for delivering strong performances here. This time, though, I felt completely deflated and have been trying to figure out what went wrong. A 3000m race two weeks later showed that fitness wasn’t the issue—it might have just been a bad day at the worst possible time. Now we get ready for hopefully a healthy and successful 2025.
