[Video Summary] 1. The Gap Between Psychologists' Fields of Work and Doctors' Perceptions Psychologists' Fields of Work Licensed psychologists' activities are roughly one-third each in healthcare, education, and welfare. The legal system accounts for only a few percent. Physicians tend to associate psychologists with healthcare, but in reality, only one-third of psychologists are in the healthcare field. Physicians are largely unaware of the work of psychologists involved in welfare and education. Scale of Healthcare and Welfare Japan's National Budget: Approximately 100 trillion yen Healthcare: Approximately 10 trillion yen Welfare: Approximately 25 trillion yen (largest in the nursing care field) →Physicians tend to think that healthcare is overwhelmingly large, but in fact, welfare is larger. 2. The "Difference" of Psychologists from the Perspective of Medical Professionals Their Prerequisites as Medical Professionals are Different Other paramedical professionals (nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, clinical laboratory technicians, etc.) learn basic medical knowledge such as anatomy and pharmacology as a common language. On the other hand, many psychologists graduate from faculties of literature or education, and medical knowledge is not required. Even psychologists in the medical field often lack the basic medical knowledge expected by doctors. Physicians' discomfort While working as paramedicals, there are many situations where a doctor's instructions are not required, and some psychologists provide counseling independently. Physicians tend to expect psychologists to have the same medical knowledge as other paramedicals, but this can lead to misunderstandings. 3. Information Sharing Issues Patient Complaints Patients complain that "information is not shared between doctors and psychologists" and "the same things have to be repeated." The Reality While collaboration within hospitals is based on shared medical records and written instructions, collaboration is weaker in private counseling offices. Psychologists tend to write detailed, lengthy findings, while doctors only want the main points (for test reports, one-line summaries such as "No special notes" or "3cm kidney cyst present" are preferred). Physicians feel that "if it's too detailed, I won't have time to read it," while psychologists feel that "details are necessary for handover and to prevent misunderstandings." 4. The Need for Mutual Understanding and Challenges The Core Reason for Lack of Understanding Differences in Fields of Activity – Physicians do not understand psychologists' education and welfare fields. Differences in Basic Knowledge – Psychologists may not have studied basic medical knowledge and therefore do not meet the level expected by doctors. Future Direction The Certified Psychologist System is strengthening medical-related curricula, but it is still in a transitional phase. Physicians also need to understand that "psychologists occupy a unique position among medical professionals." In multidisciplinary collaboration, it is better to clarify the division of roles and not evaluate psychologists by the same standards as nurses and medical technicians. 5. Conclusion Physicians and psychologists cannot understand each other because, despite the fundamental differences in expected roles, they tend to evaluate each other by the same standards. By understanding their roles and backgrounds, psychologists can play an important role in the medical field. Haga: "It's important to understand each other's roles and expertise before dismissing each other as 'useless.'" Aoki: "Psychiatrists also need to strengthen their medical knowledge and, if necessary, provide concise summaries and other forms of compromise."
