Gentling Our Most Fearful Mustang
Honey is not progressing like other mustangs… and honestly, that’s exactly why we are choosing to document her journey. In this video we share a very real look into working with an extremely fearful wild mustang. Honey is a 5 year old mare from the South Steens Herd Management Area in Oregon, and while we expected her to be scared like any untouched mustang, her level of fear goes far beyond what we anticipated. We talk openly about the struggles, the setbacks, the tiny wins, and the reality that not every mustang gentling journey looks the same. Some horses connect quickly. Others, like Honey, take an incredible amount of patience, timing, and understanding. This is not a “30 day miracle mustang” story. This is the slow, honest, frustrating, and rewarding side of working with truly wild horses. We also discuss the changes we are making to help Honey, including putting a smaller pen inside her larger corral, introducing the stick and string in a lower pressure environment, concerns about her neck tag and hooves, and why we are choosing to move slowly with her rather than forcing progress. Even if this journey takes far longer than expected (or even if we ultimately fail with Honey) we still believe there is value in sharing the process honestly. As always — thank you for watching!
