Does even climbing stairs hurt your knees? Age is always a tricky thing. We gain a lot of life experience and relaxation, but our bodies also constantly show us our limits. Osteoarthritis is one of the diseases that can quickly put a damper on our idea of eternal youth. Let me put it this way: If we live long enough, we'll all get osteoarthritis. And point 2: Not all osteoarthritis is symptomatic; it's estimated that roughly one in three people experience symptoms. What exactly is osteoarthritis? To understand osteoarthritis, we need to take a closer look at the bones. For our movements to be smooth, in the truest sense of the word, we need shock absorbers. If bone simply rubbed against bone, we would experience pain with every step and would only be able to walk awkwardly, or not at all. These shock absorbers are formed by the cartilage that surrounds the bones. It absorbs impacts and ensures that walking is pain-free. As we age, we often lose cartilage mass, which then leads to problems with the affected joints. To continue the shock absorber analogy: In a car, the shock absorber also eventually ages, and then the car rattles and clatters when it has to drive over potholes. These potholes are theoretically represented in humans by every single step that our skeletal system has to somehow absorb. What symptoms occur with osteoarthritis? The first signs are sometimes mild joint pain after a long period of inactivity. After such breaks on the sofa or at night in bed, it is more difficult for us to become active again. We then experience occasional and only short-term pain in the affected joints. However, the opposite can also occur: If we overexert ourselves, we can also experience overuse injuries. The particularly problematic aspect is that the level of strain required for this decreases over time, forcing us into increasingly inactive states. Another point: We often speak of so-called "activated osteoarthritis." Deactivation is sometimes possible for several weeks to months – even without therapy. How is osteoarthritis treated? Unfortunately, treating osteoarthritis often only means slowing its progression. Osteoarthritis cannot be cured or reversed; we can often only ensure that it doesn't worsen. Depending on which joint is affected, doctors have various options available. Of course, we can use medication to alleviate pain and combat inflammation in the joints. In addition, we can surgically replace a joint or fuse it completely to prevent further discomfort. Exercise therapy or sports for osteoarthritis can help relieve the joint by increasing muscle strength. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With "Video Visit Dr. Weigl," you've found a current and medically sound channel that explains topics related to pain, medicine, and health in an understandable way, based on facts, guidelines, and studies. ▬ More videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Osteoarthritis: My 5 tips for guaranteed pain reduction: https://bit.ly/5Arthrose-Tipps_Video Recognizing thumb osteoarthritis on an X-ray: https://bit.ly/RhizarthroseRöntgen_Video Hip osteoarthritis explained in simple terms: https://bit.ly/Hüftarthrose_Video Answering the osteoarthritis myth.
