Healthy cartilage functions like a smooth shock absorber. It absorbs stress, distributes pressure evenly, and ensures that the bones don't rub directly against each other. In osteoarthritis, this shock absorber gradually becomes thinner, cracked, and less elastic. Movements feel stiffer, and getting out of bed in the morning becomes a short warm-up before the joints can move somewhat normally again. As the disease progresses, pain and occasional swelling develop. At the same time, a vicious cycle begins: Breakdown products from the damaged cartilage irritate the synovial membrane. This reacts by releasing inflammatory substances. The inflammation, in turn, accelerates cartilage degradation. It's a self-reinforcing process that not only alters the cartilage but also the underlying bone, potentially causing additional discomfort. This is precisely where diet and lifestyle come into play, as they can reduce inflammation, relieve stress on the joints, and slow the progression of the disease.
