New Common Sense About Footsteps That 90% of Runners Don't Know | Is Quieter Running Always Better? "People who make loud footsteps have bad running form." "You should run more quietly." Have you ever heard this while running? Certainly, consciously trying to run quietly can change your foot strike and body mechanics, potentially altering the stress on your body. However, Loud footsteps don't necessarily equal greater impact on the body. In fact, a study comparing three foot strike methods—heel, midfoot, and forefoot—showed the opposite result: heel strike was the quietest. Furthermore, no clear relationship was found between the loudness of footsteps and the actual stress on the body. This video will cover: Does loud footsteps increase the impact on the body? How does "running quietly" change your running style? How do footsteps differ depending on whether you strike the heel, the center of the sole, or the forefoot? Why was heel strike the quietest? Is there a relationship between footstep noise and physical stress? How do footsteps change depending on the shoes and road surface? How can runners utilize footstep noise? We will explain these points from the perspective of running research and biomechanics, in a way that is easy for ordinary runners to understand. Footstep noise is not meant to be used to score a runner as "good" or "bad." On the other hand, How does your footstep noise change when you run with the same shoes, on the same surface, and at roughly the same pace? By paying attention to this, it can potentially be used as feedback to notice changes in your running. "My footsteps are loud, so does that mean my form is bad?" "Should I run more quietly?"
