Rachel Meriembe – CoMuse Fellow 2025

(for English scroll down) Dr. Rachel Mariembe leitet die Abteilung für Heritage Studies (Kulturerbeforschung) und Museumswissenschaft am Institut für Bildende Künste der Universität Douala in Nkongsamba, Kamerun. Sie hat einen PhD in Heritage Science und ist die Koordinatorin des Heritage Science-Labors der Fakultät für Bildende Künste und Kulturerbeforschung des Graduiertenkollegs für Sozial-und Geisteswissenschaften der Universität Douala. Seit 2023 ist sie Mitglied der “Kommission der Erinnerung”, die von der französischen Regierung ins Leben gerufen wurde, und forscht zur Rolle Frankreichs in Kamerun während der Kolonialzeit von 1955 bis 1971. Sie verbrachte ein Forschungssemester an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, wo sie sich auf Provenienzforschung zu kolonialen Raubgütern konzentrierte. Rachel Mariembe war an der Gründung von sieben Community Museen beteiligt und hat die Ausstellung “Sur la Route des Chefferies du Cameroun: Du visible à l’invisible” im Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac in Paris mitorganisiert. Sie beantragte die Aufnahme des Nguon Festivals in die Repräsentative Liste des immateriellen Welterbes der Menschheit und setzte sich erfolgreich dafür ein, dass die Stadt Nkongsamba im Oktober 2023 in das UNESCO-Netzwerk der kreativen Städte aufgenommen wurde. CoMuse – Das Kollaborative Museum ist eine Initiative des Ethnologischen Museums und des Museums für Asiatische Kunst. Ziel ist es, multiperspektivische Ansätze in der sammlungsbasierten Forschung zu entwickeln und neue Formate kollaborativer Prozesse zu erproben, um Dekolonisierung und Diversifizierung der Museumspraxis nachhaltig zu stärken. She holds a PhD in Heritage Science and is the coordinator of the Heritage Sciences Laboratory within the UFD Arts and Heritage Sciences, Doctoral School of Social and Human Sciences, University of Douala. She has been an appointed member of the “Commission of Memory” since 2023, working on the role of France in Cameroon during colonization from 1955 to 1971, initiated by the French government. She was a research fellow at the University of Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz, Germany, focusing on provenance research on colonial looted collections. Rachel Mariembe has participated in the creation of seven community museums in Cameroon as well as the exhibition “Sur la Route des Chefferies du Cameroun: Du visible à l’invisible” at the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac in France. She helped draw up the application for the Nguon Festival to be included on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. She also led the application for the city of Nkongsamba to be included in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network, which resulted in the city being admitted to the network in October 2023. CoMuse – The Collaborative Museum is an initiative of the Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst. Its aim is to develop multi-perspective approaches to collection-based research and to test new formats for collaborative processes in order to sustainably strengthen the decolonization and diversification of museum practice.
