¿Y si saltásemos todos a la vez?
❓ What would happen if everyone jumped at the same time? ✅ Could we move the Earth? Would we cause any kind of earthquake? And would we be able to accelerate the planet's rotation? If 8 billion people jumped at the same time, the Earth would indeed move… but so little that it would be ridiculous on a physical scale, and the only “noticeable” thing would come from the impact with the ground. In the video, we set up the experiment under "optimal" conditions: everyone gathered in a small area (about 2,000 km², similar to Luxembourg) and jumping simultaneously. First, the big myth: moving the planet. Due to conservation of momentum, the jump would displace the Earth by an amount close to zero, so small that it wouldn't even make sense to compare it to anything we experience in everyday life. The planet is far too massive; the actual effect is more like a mathematical insignificance than a push. The interesting part comes next: the collective impact. There are measured precedents, such as the BBC experiment at the 2011 Reading Festival, where 50,000 people generated a "mini-earthquake" equivalent to a magnitude 0.6. If you scale the idea to billions, you enter a range that could resemble a magnitude 5 earthquake: it would be widely felt, could cause minor damage to well-maintained structures and more significant damage to poorly constructed buildings, but it wouldn't be a geological apocalypse. And even then, there wouldn't be a "planet effect" in the popular sense: to appreciably alter the Earth's rotation would require an event above magnitude 8, something that would demand a population millions of times larger than the current one. The conclusion is almost ironic: truly massive earthquakes have indeed shortened days by microseconds (Japan 2011, Chile 2010, the 2004 Southeast Asian earthquake), but the leap of all humanity wouldn't even come close to that level. In the end, the challenge doesn't demonstrate our power over the Earth, but rather the opposite: how enormous the planet is… and how easy it is to be misled by intuition when we talk about scales.
