#ReligiousStudies, #Zen, #OkadaStyleSittingMethod This is a conversation with Kento Suzuki, who recently returned to Japan after studying Contemplative Studies at Brown University in the US, having studied in Armenia at the age of 16. Contemplative Studies is a discipline that explores the transformation of consciousness through contemplative practices such as Zen meditation, yoga, and mindfulness. His words were striking: rather than studying religion from the outside, experiencing it firsthand reveals what changes and what remains unchanged from within. Mr. Suzuki shared his experience of "extreme hardship leads to transformation, and transformation leads to success" during his training at a Zen temple. He also spoke about his roots, including his family's Christian faith, and his desire for a place where he could confront intangible questions through physics and music. In the middle of the conversation, there was an improvised performance of the duduk, an Armenian flute with a history of over 3000 years. He also shared his experience of playing the duduk in front of the victims' families on the night of the Brown University shooting, and how he coped with the unspeakable grief. In the second half, he introduced his encounter with the Okada-style meditation method, devised by Torajiro Okada, who was born in Tahara, Aichi Prefecture. The Okada-style meditation method was practiced by figures such as Tokugawa Yoshinobu, Shibusawa Eiichi, Miyazawa Kenji, and Tanaka Mieji. Okada left no written records, simply teaching "sitting quietly," and passed away at the age of 49. Having studied various meditation techniques, Mr. Suzuki spoke at length about the appeal of the Okada-style meditation method, which he sees as the pinnacle of Japanese spirituality. Please enjoy!
