(Revised and Expanded Edition) (Suiseisha). Eleven years have passed since the first edition was written in 2015. We delved into Ms. Kato's question: Spirituality, which was then only for a select few, is now becoming central to society. In an era where the distinction between "synchronicity" and "causality" is blurring, the boom in fortune-telling, AI-based predictions, and personality tests like MBTI has become a customizable "faith package" for confirming the self one wants to believe in. The essential differences between legitimate spiritual care (such as grief care) and kitschy spirituality—whether it's based on money, rooted in culture, or whether it confronts or ignores negative aspects—are carefully discussed, along with the merits and demerits of narratives. Furthermore, drawing on Nancy Frazer's concept of "cannibalistic capitalism," the book points out the ambiguity of spirituality: while it functions as a "last line of defense" for those being consumed by capitalism, it can also be a gateway to other forms of violence (conspiracy theories and support for far-right parties). The latter half of the book, significantly expanded in the revised and enlarged edition, discusses "unveiling the secrets of chakras and auras" and "self-intoxication under the guise of health." This book offers an opportunity to consider where we should be headed in these times of swirling anxiety.
