Bitung is the capital of Indonesia's tuna industry, where the entire port transforms into a massive tuna market. Every year from May to July, both fishermen and merchants are incredibly busy. In this city, where even stray cats are said to live on nothing but tuna, we meet Mr. Kasman, a special fisherman who catches tuna using kites. He sets out to sea in search of yellowfin tuna weighing over 20kg. Instead of using high-tech equipment, Mr. Kasman chooses his kite-flying spot by watching the birds in the sky and the fish leaping out of the water. A short while later, the kite soars high into the sky, leaving Mr. Kasman with nothing but two fishing lines. Will they really be able to catch a yellowfin tuna? When tuna season arrives, smoke billows from the vicinity of Bitung. This is due to the "Cakalang Fufu," a dish where coconut shells are piled high like mountains. Cakalang Fufu is a traditional North Sulawesi dish made by securing skipjack tuna in a bamboo frame and smoking it for a long time using coconut shells. We meet the family of Mr. Trisa, famous in the village for their exceptional culinary skills. They process about 200 skipjack tuna a day, and the entire family pitches in during the season. After finishing all the work, they light a fire in the coconut shells, but strangely, the smoke rises in only one direction.
