A place where magic happens during the polar night of a harsh winter. The journey begins in the Lofoten Islands of northern Norway, often called the "Alps of the North Sea" for its dramatic coastlines and mountainous terrain. Consisting of seven major islands and hundreds of smaller islets, the size of the fish caught in the Lofoten Islands during this season defies imagination! This is because migratory fish species gather here to spawn ahead of the winter season. In Svolvær, the vibrant gateway to Lofoten, bright red "rorbu"—traditional cabins that once housed fishermen—line the coast. They represent the living history of fishermen who used to flock here from all over Norway during the winter. We take a look into the lives of these old fishermen alongside Ulla, the keeper of a traditional rorbu. Ulla’s friend, Geir, is a veteran fisherman with over 25 years of experience. In the pitch-black early morning before sunrise, we follow him out to sea. During this season, everything in the waters of Lofoten is colossal. Even the crabs are the size of a human face, but the ultimate prize is undoubtedly the Atlantic halibut! Geir raises expectations by sharing that he once battled for 3 to 4 hours to haul in a massive halibut weighing over 100kg. Will they succeed in catching the giant halibut? The man who originally built the rorbu in Svolvær was a local landowner and a staunch supporter of the fishermen in the past. Today, Ulla serves as the caretaker of the landowner's luxury villa, which still stands. Invited inside, we get to taste Norway’s national snack: waffles topped with brown cheese and strawberry jam. Next, we head to a sheep farm on the island of Vestvågøy, where another kind of magic is waiting. A sheep named Akla clings to its owner, Ragnhild, rubbing against her like a pet dog. The sheep here belong to an ancient Norwegian breed, specially adapted to survive Norway's freezing winters. Ragnhild spins the sheep's wool into yarn and dyes it using natural ingredients. When she dips the white woolen yarn into boiling water, it magically turns blue. The farm's shop is packed with tourists who have come to buy knitting yarn in various colors. We hear stories about Nordic people who love knitting so much that it is even included in their regular school curriculum. Finally, in the village of Bugøynes located in the Arctic Ocean, young people plunge into the freezing winter sea wearing nothing but swimsuits in -20°C weather. Confronting the cold head-on—this is how they truly enjoy the polar night of Northern Europe.
