In this video, I want to demonstrate a method for comparing the efficiency of portable antennas. A good SWR, while an important antenna parameter, is by no means the only one. For example, a 50-ohm resistor attached to the antenna may have an SWR of 1 over a wide range, but its efficiency as an antenna tends toward zero. The method is simple: we'll need a generator with any antenna attached to its output. For example, a NanoVNA or TinySa can be used as a generator. And a field strength meter. Previously, I used a microammeter with a detector for this. Today, it's much more convenient to use, for example, a Quansheng UV-K5, focusing on the dBm readings of its S-meter, which is much more convenient than the linear readings of a conventional field strength meter. It's best to take measurements outdoors, rather than indoors, as in my video. The distance between the signal source and the receiver should be at least several wavelengths. The video tested the effectiveness of various rubber bands for reception in the Satcom downlink range of 245-270 MHz.
