The Tablelands | Kuranda Train & Skyrail | The Barron Falls
Got to love a good touristy day out! In this episode, we tick off a Cairns bucket list item and hop on board the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway! This beautiful 90-minute trip takes you deep into the tropical rainforest as it winds its way up the mountain, offering breathtaking views of Stony Creek and Barron Falls. Climbing the rugged terrain of Barron Gorge, the railway required the construction of 15 tunnels, 55 bridges, and more than 150 cuttings. Hundreds of tons of rock and earth were excavated by men with shovels and wheelbarrows, aided by explosives. Sadly, 32 men lost their lives in accidents during construction. After a quick sugar hit in Kuranda, we make our way to the Kuranda Skyrail. This wonderful tourist attraction glides for around 7.5 km above the rainforest canopy between Smithfield (Cairns) and Kuranda. I must admit, this provides a truly unique perspective of Australia’s Wet Tropics World Heritage Area as you quietly float over the treetops. There are a few stops on the way back down to Cairns, including the rainforest boardwalks at Red Peak and Barron Falls. The views are simply stunning, and we highly recommend adding this to your list if you’re visiting Cairns!
