The Tablelands | Rainforests and Ancient Volcanoes
In this episode, we continue our journey through the Atherton Tablelands, exploring some of the stunning natural landscapes shaped over thousands of years. The Atherton Tablelands region is home to some of Queensland's most unique rainforests, formed through its violent volcanic past and distinct tropical elevation. We are still based at Mareeba Bush Stays, and our first stop in this episode is the Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda. The park offers amphibious Army Duck Rainforest Tours, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience, and is home to some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Although it was a touristy day out, it was also very enjoyable! Next, we visit the famous Curtain Fig Tree, one of the largest trees in Tropical North Queensland and a must-see attraction in the Atherton Tablelands! The tree stands almost 50 metres tall, has a trunk circumference of 39 metres, and is estimated to be over 500 years old. Our final stop this episode is Lake Eacham (originally Yidyam or Wiinggina), a crater lake formed over 10,000 years ago by an ancient volcano. The lake's pristine, clear blue water is breath-taking. There is also a 3km walking circuit that loops around the lake through some of the Atherton Tablelands’ most spectacular rainforest.
