Le campane di Corbetta (MI) - Distesa

The first Christian core of Corbetta (Italy) originated in the 3rd century, when the bishop of Milan had an oratory built over an ancient pagan altar. The small shrine was enlarged until it was completely rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1037, when the crypt was added. From the 11th century onwards, the church began to be referred to as the main church of the entire area. In the 13th century Corbetta had over fifteen canons, who celebrated in twenty-nine chapels on the plain. In 1535 the roof collapsed, destroying the high altar, and was only restored after the passage of Carlo Borromeo, who unfortunately had to confirm the children in the parvis in 1570. The new bell tower was built in the 17th century, using the Romanesque base of an ancient tower, which was raised again in 1699. The collegiate church dedicated to the martyr saint Victor was renovated in 1725, removing valuable medieval frescoes that had been preserved. The new church was raised in 1792, as the restoration caused the entire structure to collapse. The masonry work was completed in 1809, while the new façade was laid in 1848. The 42-metre bell tower was equipped with five bells in the 19th century. On 24 October 1891, the church was consecrated by Patriarch Ballerini. To mark the importance of the church, the tower was raised to a height of 81 metres in 1898, causing the entire structure to collapse on 2 June 1902, with the bells destroyed. The new tower was completed in 1908 to reach 71 metres, with nine new bells cast by Barigozzi of Milan in B flat major. In 1943, the three major bells were removed from the tower for war purposes, but the parish priest managed to force the soldiers to return them to the parish. The major bell cracked during dismantling and was paid for by the state as war damage. In 1960, the fifth bell was remelted, as was the new big bell, which was remelted in 1985. All castings were carried out by descendants of the Barigozzi brothers.
