The first church was built in 595 by Queen Theodolinda as the chapel of the royal palace in Monza, the summer residence of the Lombard court. The church was filled with gold and silver and chosen for the sacraments of the heirs to the throne, as well as for the coronations of kings and emperors. The queen was buried in the church upon her death, while the entire building was completely rebuilt in the early 14th century to coincide with the first Jubilee in history. A - B - c' sharp - d' - e' - f' sharp - g' sharp - a' The foundation stone of the new bell tower was laid on 23 May 1592 and its construction lasted until 1606, when it reached its current height of eighty metres. The new five bells were blessed by Archbishop Borromeo in 1628 and rang until 1740, when the wooden belfry was destroyed by a devastating fire. The bells were replaced by a new concert of eight in 1741, considered to be among the best in Italy and Europe with their total weight of 112 quintals and rung in the musical scale of A major. The eight bells ring during the town festival, which coincides with the solemnity of the birth of the precursor John the Baptist. The ringing of all the bells is a rare event, occurring five times a year, as does the solo major bell: this only rings three days a year alone, a sign of incredible solemnity. The bells also play traditional carillons. The church became the site of imperial coronations, where one of three crowns was presented: the silver crown at Aachen, the golden crown at Rome and the famous iron crown at Monza, the only one to contain the nail of the True Cross of Christ and used by Charlemagne and later Napoleon himself. The interior of the church is a unique fresco, which places it at the top of the most beautiful churches I have ever visited in my life.
