Restoration of Rusty Bowie Knife - Texas Hero. Hi! Today we are restoring a legendary Bowie knife. I was lucky enough to acquire this piece at a flea market. It was lying under a pile of various items — axes and knives. I saw the tip of the blade and immediately identified what kind of knife it was, and then purchased it. The condition was severe: a thick layer of rust, which is rare to see. It is difficult to determine the exact dating of the piece, but it is at least from the 20th century. The handle is missing, as well as the sheath. Apparently, the knife had been stored in a very humid environment, which is why the blade is heavily corroded. But now I will restore it and bring it back to a proper condition. Let’s begin. First, I removed the surface rust using a soft wire brush, after which I placed the knife into a container and covered it with kerosene. After many hours, I took it out, dried it, and began the cleaning process. As always, I try to use the most natural and accessible methods. I used a mixture of crushed soft brick, sea salt, and charcoal, later adding melted oil. With this mixture, I began polishing the blade. After the first layer of rust was removed, it became clear that there was still a significant amount left, so I used a soft wire brush on low speed with a drill. Then I treated the surface with a cleaning agent and applied a rust converter to remove even more corrosion. After that, I rinsed the blade in warm water with baking soda and brushed it again. The final stage was sandpaper, oil, and kerosene. After hand polishing, the blade cleaning was complete. Any further work would have started to affect the historical layer of the object. The next step was removing the old rivets, hand-cleaning the parts, and crafting the handle. I made the handle from deer antler, and the rivets are brass. To add authenticity, I hand-engraved each of the four rivets with initials and the name James Bowie, in memory of those who created and first used this knife. After that, I proceeded to make a leather sheath. It was made in a classic style, designed for belt carry, with a few subtle details added.
