From the age of ten to nineteen, I spent my vacations in Chichiriviche de la Costa. That's why I wanted to return. This chapter is a journey back to childhood, to the house by the sea where I grew up, and to the laughter that still echoes in the waves. Tarcisia would arrive every morning with a cloth on her head filled with arepas freshly made on the stove. She had a smile that revealed white teeth and a new belly every year. I recently visited her daughters, and they welcomed me with papaya candy. I walked through the town, greeted the people, ate fried fish with tostones, and remembered every corner of that coast that shaped me. I didn't dive this time, but I remembered when I descended 22 meters to the Christ statue in the divers' bay. Back then, there were no lionfish, and marine life was abundant. Now, that invasive fish has multiplied, and only Willian is responsible for catching them and turning them into delicious ceviche. The most moving discovery was meeting "Las Morenas de Chichiriviche," a group of women who decided to save the drum from oblivion by playing it themselves, after the men had abandoned it. They learned to play music every time the power went out. That is the strength of this community: joy, resilience, and memory.
