In Venezuela, we've grown accustomed to praising only the bounties of nature, which are notable and glorious, but a gift from God for which we have no credit. Quite the opposite. We've destroyed quite a bit. I want to focus on praising and sharing the work of Venezuelans. Puerto Cabello is an extraordinary example to start with. It's in the heart of the country, close to the most populated cities, by the sea, which is what Venezuelans most seek when it comes to vacations, and yet it receives few visitors. Its historic center has been restored with true care. The current governor of Carabobo is a native of Puerto Cabello; it pains him, it matters to him, and he's determined to turn it into the jewel it can and should be. Its history is fascinating, unknown, and well-told. There's a wide range of inns and restaurants. The roads are perfect. I want to convince Venezuelans and the world to visit Puerto Cabello, and I give them three reasons: 1. The powerful history told by my sister, Inés, the historian, the wise woman who is eloquent, emphatic, and entertaining, and narrates the events in a colloquial yet rigorous manner. It was here that Venezuela was liberated with the capture of Puerto Cabello. A city that began to flourish through trade. And it has an extraordinary history museum unlike any other city in Venezuela. 2. Even its beaches tell stories, because the most famous, Isla Larga, has two sunken ships from World War II and are also protected beaches as they belong to San Esteban National Park. We also visited Santo Domingo and Alcatraz islands, completely isolated because they are reserves. 3. And the third motif is "Motivos," the legendary song by Italo Pizzolante, the musician from Puerto Cabello, the author of its anthem, whom we honor by singing in the car, at sea, in the plaza, and finally in his house-turned-inn with his piano.
