I'm a true fan of Mochima National Park in Sucre state, between Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná. I've been visiting since I was a teenager; then, after I was divorced and with 2-year-old Arianna, we spent time there, staying at an uncle's house in the Altos de Sucre. There was a time when I sailed around. I've stayed in Mochima a thousand times because it's a rental town. It's hilarious. Everyone rents a small house, an annex, a room, and at unusually affordable prices. From the pier, the peñeros depart for each beach, with fixed rates posted on a sign in the ticket office. The closest include Playa Blanca, Pozo del Canario, Mangle Quemado, La Gabarra, and Las Marites; more distant ones include Manare or the Caracas Islands. There are secrets that only locals know, such as the aquarium, the Tentenocaira cave, or Las Burbujas. Many of these beaches offer tremendous services: chairs and awnings, as well as restaurants right by the sea, serving freshly caught fish with salad and tostón (fried plantain), seafood, paellas, shrimp, and even fruit smoothies, coconut drinks, and cocktails. These are very pristine beaches, with glorious coves and pristine waters that often have green reflections due to the thickness of the nearby mountains. Only peñeros or sailboats sail there. No one is speeding because the plan is to enjoy. Enjoy the endless shades of blue, observe the rocky outcrops, the red earth, and the black of some of the stones. You can kayak between beaches without the risk of being run over. Paddle alongside the outcrops to see the crabs and get close to the rocks to hear the roar of the sea as it hits them. Sailing alongside fascinating pods of dolphins is an incredible experience. They are fat, large, and robust, and they jump alongside their young, noticeably young babies. They are never shy; they approach confidently, knowing that we only want to admire them. In this chapter, we visit all the beaches, from the most popular, with a variety of services, to Cautarito, a beach with resounding sand, untouched by human intervention. I even propose converting it into a nudist beach, since there isn't one in the entire park. We also walked through the town of Mochima, visiting cottages and inns, shops and restaurants, diving services, mask and wine cellar rentals... everything they offer visitors. Before leaving, we visited IDEA, an agency of the Ministry of Science and Technology, where they breed seahorses to repopulate the park's waters with these defenseless, tiny, and precious creatures. For this species, the father raises the young, and up to 60 seahorses are born with each birth. And if you prefer to stay in an inn away from town, nestled in the forest, on a mountain that juts out into the sea like a peninsula, I recommend Villa Majagual. It's run by Cecilia and her children, and there you'll eat like a god.
