Articles criticizing needs-based parenting as a trend keep appearing in publications like Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung—and frankly, it really gets on my nerves. Most of them aren't written by experts, nor do they understand what needs-based parenting actually is. That's why, in this episode, I'm taking the time to provide a historical and societal context: Where does needs-based parenting come from? Why is it being questioned so much right now? And how can we, as professionals, develop a clear stance on it—and maintain it? I'll explain how it all began with attachment theory after World War II, what attachment parenting, gentle parenting, and Jean Liedloff have to do with it—and why I eventually decided to develop my own definition for the professional context together with Katrin Hohmann.
