#118 - Neue Bertelsmannstudie - Kinderschutz
In this episode of the Kita Podcast, I speak with Dr. Marina Lagemann about a new, very large study by the Bertelsmann Foundation: "Psychosocial Stress and Child Protection in Daycare Centers – Professionals Are Paying Attention." What particularly moved me about this study is that, with over *21,000 educators surveyed* (including directors, staff, trainees/students, and interns), it provides a very broad **insight**: How frequently is harmful behavior observed? What effect does this have on the teams? And why do people sometimes fail to intervene in situations where children need protection? We discuss how much *professionals* are burdened by such observations—and why, for me, *child protection* and *staff retention* cannot be considered separately. I found the described feelings particularly striking: compassion and anger—but also powerlessness, shame, fear, and resignation. I also have an update: We're currently working on the comprehensive BoP online course (6 modules, approximately 16 hours of video material). There will also be a free webinar on March 13th from 6:00 to 7:00 PM – I'll include the link in the show notes. *In this episode, I talk with Marina about:* what exactly the study examines and why it's so relevant to practice how often professionals experience situations where they feel the need to protect children emotionally or physically the role of staff shortages and team culture why intervention often fails to occur (uncertainty, fear of team reactions, bullying dynamics) the resulting strain on professionals – and what this means for employee retention why trainees/students sometimes perceive hurtful behavior more frequently the responsibility of management and the sponsoring organization and why "paying attention" is the basis for change *Key Takeaways* For me, this episode clearly demonstrates once again: child protection and employee retention are interconnected. When people experience persistent inner conflict, powerlessness, or moral distress, it drains their energy—and can lead to illness or even withdrawal in the long run. Team culture is a key protective factor. It's not about "teamwork just sort of working," but about genuine stability, appreciation, and openness to feedback. I also take away this: Failure to intervene rarely fails simply due to lack of time—often it's more about fear, uncertainty, and a lack of support. Managers play a crucial role—and at the same time, managers also need leeway and support from the organization so that child protection isn't left to chance. 🎓 Free Webinar 👉 https://myablefy.com/s/bo-akademie/ko...
