I don't think it was like this two weeks ago, at least I don't recall it, and it's something that immediately makes you think. They've removed the white tarp that had been in place for so long on the north side of the historic canopy. It was put up to separate the area occupied by the slab from the rest of the building, and now it's gone. If I tell you it's been three years, I might even be understating it. There's even a small vantage point on the first floor, near the south entrance to the canopy, from where you can see the north side. I repeat, a small and distant vantage point. But you can see that the tarp is gone, you can see the side walkway, and you can even see a bit of what lies beyond the north facade of the building. That makes me think the opening could be near, very near. I don't know if it will be in July, as they told me back in May, but it feels like they're making giant strides, even if they aren't visually striking. They're also continuing work on the section that connects the historic canopy with the commercial area of ​​Atocha, which then leads to the commuter rail and the Metro. Two weeks ago, they were already installing the first pieces of a kind of false ceiling, and today there was even a section with the new lighting. A bit dim for my taste, but perhaps it will look better once all the pieces are installed and all the lights are working. There's still work to be done; there's still a lot of material to be added outside, but I wouldn't dare say they won't open everything before the end of the month. As for the new access points, well, everything is progressing more and more. There are new bushes and new trees, the benches have arrived, there are handrails on the ramps and stairs, lots of exposed brick... In just three months, they've done almost everything, and it also seems like there's not much left to finish. I don't know if it will be in two weeks, but perhaps by August. And everything should connect more seamlessly with the interior, accessible through the doors on the north facade. We're all eager to see it finished after so many years. P3B is still closed, and every time I see it, I understand less why it's not operational. Today, from the outside, there was nothing left to indicate that anything remains to be done. Remove a few things and that's it. Everything is perfect, well-painted, and well-finished. It makes me think that perhaps they won't open it until the new VIP lounge is finished, although I don't see the connection. Perhaps opening the new lounge will mean permanently closing P2 and opening P3B. I'm not sure. At the same time, the seemingly complete framework of the new platform is already visible. It will probably all be concreted by the next visit, in two weeks. They're also excavating a little further south of where they've already built the new platform, so I don't think it will be too long before we see new pillars to support it. And finally, the four new sidings and the commuter rail works. The four tracks are still only two, although it seems the other two are well underway, and the commuter rail works are nearing completion. They will transition to the new 4-3-3 configuration, improving the capacity of the Sol tunnel. All of this should mean an improvement for commuter rail users in Madrid. Happy Thursday!
