Aqua Instructor Tip - is all about creating effort without going anywhere. Stop the Rock! πŸ’¦πŸ˜

This week's Aqua Instructor Tip is another one of those combinations that reminds me we don't always need big jumps, fancy choreography or complicated movements to challenge our participants. Sometimes all it takes is a pair of hands... We begin with a simple grounded movement. One arm scoops down across the body with the palm, then pulls back with a long, straight arm using the back of the hand. It sounds simple, but that little change in hand position completely changes how the water feels. This is where your coaching becomes so important. Most participants naturally want to rotate the palm as they pull back. They've spent years doing exactly that. So don't be surprised if you find yourself repeating the same cue over and over. "Back of the hand." "Thumb stays on top." "Fingers together." Point to your own hand. Show them. Repeat it again. Then perhaps say it differently. "Keep the outside of the hand leading." "Don't let the palm turn." People don't always hear instructions the same way. Sometimes changing your wording is all it takes for someone to suddenly 'get it'. Once you've completed the movement on one side, add in a familiar cardio block. A set of jacks, a jog or a cross-country ski works perfectly here. The cardio isn't just about lifting the heart rate. It also gives the shoulders a well-earned break and gives the brain permission to relax before learning the next layer. Then return to the grounded movement and repeat on the opposite arm. Before long, you're alternating from right to left. This is where things become really interesting. Although everyone is concentrating on the working arm, the rest of the body is working incredibly hard behind the scenes. The feet are pushing into the pool floor. The abdominal muscles switch on. The hips are trying not to move. The torso is fighting to stay still while the water tries to pull it off balance. It's balance, stability, and abdominal training...all cleverly disguised as an arm exercise. One of my favourite coaching cues here is simply... "Stop the rock!" The harder participants pull through the water, the more the body naturally wants to move. Our job is to resist it. That's where the work is. As instructors, try not to add unnecessary movement while demonstrating this exercise on the pool deck. Plant your feet. Keep your torso strong. Let your arms do the work. Your participants don't need to see you dancing around the pool deck. They need to clearly see what matters most. As the combination progresses, we introduce both arms together. Both arms scoop forward. Pull back wide with long straight levers. Repeat. Again, I encourage you to slow everything down. Watch the hands. Coach the hands. Keep pointing to the thumbs. Keep reminding participants about the back of the hand. These little details make a huge difference to how much resistance they create. Once everyone is comfortable, we add the final progression. Now the movement becomes: Scoop forward Pull back Push forward Pull down The palms continue facing forward as the direction changes. This is another moment where participants will instinctively want to rotate their hands. Watch. Coach. Correct. Repeat. Turning side-on to the class works beautifully here because participants can actually see what you're talking about. I often explain that if they're creating enough resistance, they'll feel their body wanting to rock backwards and forwards. Then I smile and say... "Good... now stop the rock!" That's effort. That's abdominal control. That's using the water exactly as it was designed to be used. Finally, we put the whole combination together. Right arm scoop Left arm scoop Double arm scoop Double arm scoop with the forward push and pull down Cardio block Then repeat. Don't rush to the final combination. Participants don't need to learn it in one attempt. The longer they spend learning each layer, the more successful they'll be when everything finally comes together. Want more support?
