Aqua Instructor Tip - The Donkey Kick combo, your shoulders will remember 💪😅

This week’s Aqua Instructor Tip is one I’ve been loving in my own classes, inspired by my friend, colleague, and Aqua Mentoring member Sharyn C. It’s simple, single-sided, and sneaky-strong. Scooping Arms-push/pull + Donkey Kick (single-sided → then alternating rebound) You’re pairing a single arm push/pull (front + back) with a donkey kick on the same side. I love it because you can keep it grounded (hello stability and control), then switch the energy by adding a rebounding alternating donkey kick with both arms pushing and pulling. And the coaching gold nugget? Longer lever = more resistance. The more they lengthen through the arm on the push forward and pull behind, the more water they have to move and the more they’ll feel it. The combo as shown in the video (count of 8), but honestly, you can use whatever format works best for you. Single arm push/pull + same leg donkey kick x 2 Add the other arm (both arms now) x 2 Layer in alternating donkey kicks x 4 (rebounding) Repeat the whole sequence on the other side Pool deck teaching tips (keep it safe + clear) Because you’ll be demo’ing on one leg, have support nearby if you need it. A chair or an aqua frame is perfect. Cue it like this: “Arm pulls back as the knee comes to the chest.” “Arm pushes forward as you drive the leg back.” “Go long through the arms… don’t shorten the lever.” “Open hands, fingers spread, grab as much water as you can.” “This is a challenging one… shoulders, torso, and hips will all know about it.” Layering language that keeps everyone included This is where you’ll win the room: “Remember too… you can keep it grounded the whole time.” “See if you can… lengthen a little more through the arm.” “Ensure that… you’re stable before you add rebound.” “If you want to work harder… make the scoops bigger, not faster.” Different abilities in one class?
