Aqua Instructor Tip - a grounded upper-body combo that slowly builds into a flowing sequence 😍🌟
This Aqua Tip starts with a simple grounded upper-body movement… and slowly builds into a flowing, coordinated combination that challenges the body and the brain. We begin with a double arm scoop to the back. Hands are cupped, fingers together, elbows staying behind the body as you reach back and scoop forward through the water. It’s a fantastic movement for the biceps, but because the elbows stay behind the body, you’ll also start to feel the triceps engage. The second movement is a single arm sweep across the body. Arms begin wide, hips stay facing forward, feet remain grounded and anchored to the pool floor. One arm drives powerfully across the body with the palm pushing through the water before pulling back strongly. Then we layer them together. 2 double arm scoops + 1 single arm sweep. 2 scoops again + sweep to the other side. Simple enough at first… but then we begin layering the lower body. This is where the magic starts to happen. The double arm scoops now combine with a Cross Country Ski, while the single arm sweep lands into a wide grounded position for stability. And here’s the important coaching point… The leg that moves forward first in the ski determines which arm initiates the sweep AND eventually which leg leads the pendulum. That detail matters. Once participants understand the ski lead, we then add the final layer… the pendulum swing. As the arm sweeps across the body, the same leg swings out into the pendulum action, and the whole movement starts to flow together beautifully. This is one of those combinations that feels incredibly rewarding once participants “get it”. If your class loves mentally challenging combinations, you may build this in one session. Otherwise, break it down over several classes or weeks and let them absorb the sequence progressively. That progression is where the learning happens. And from a coaching perspective, this tip is also a reminder that effective instruction isn’t about constantly moving. Coaching is not just continuous movement and endless demonstrating. Effective coaching requires moments where we STOP. Where we point. Explain. Reference body parts. Highlight technique. Reinforce movement patterns. Help participants understand WHY something matters. As instructors, we often feel pressure to keep moving the entire time on pool deck because we think that’s what participants expect from us. But sometimes the greatest value we can offer is clear instruction and meaningful coaching. This combination is the perfect example. There are multiple layers, coordination changes and movement patterns happening all at once. If we simply keep moving without stopping to explain the important details, many participants will miss the key connections within the sequence. That instruction is valuable. That cueing matters. And that’s what helps participants succeed. KEY COACHING CUES: • Hands cupped and fingers together • Reach back until you feel the biceps engage • Elbows stay behind the body • Keep the torso stable during the single arm sweep • Feet grounded and anchored during the sweep • The ski lead leg determines the sweep side • Same arm and same leg work together during the pendulum Once they master the flow, you can really build the cardio intensity while still maintaining the coordination challenge. And that combination of physical and cognitive training is incredibly powerful for brain health. Want more support?
