God is the partner of those who work the land and San Isidro is their patron. The inhabitants of Timotes, a town in Mérida on the border with Trujillo, celebrate and honor their saint every May 15 with the same fervor of someone who sows his seeds and knows that the plant will grow because God is there and San Isidro convinces him by speaking in his ear. Young people who stayed working the plots of their parents and grandparents because the land calls, it is carried in their veins. The euphoria of seeing how those lands that were plowed with so much sweat, repay the repeated passage of the oxen, the care of placing the appropriate fertilizer, the drop of irrigation when the merciless sun dries it and cracks it. Because these are lands that have been producing food for Venezuelans for years. There is no rest. If anything, a change of field to give it novelty and thus, the land demands another type of nutrients. A farmer from Timotes explains how he decided to abandon vegetables and dedicate himself to peaches because the fruit has maintained its price and the vegetables have not. He walks his plantation every day. He pampers his plants. He lovingly shows how the two species he grows come from the same plant. Some young people comment with amazement how the chard came out orange, yellow and red. They had never seen them in colour and much less expected theirs to come out like this. Some girls are working hard on the asparagus plantation that their father started, a German who came to Timotes, had several children and left them all his plot. They were radiant because they finally managed to get the first harvest of asparagus they had planted. What unites this entire community of Timotes, apart from their love for the land, is going out into the street every 15th of May to thank San Isidro Labrador for the good harvest or to ask him for the next one. They decorate their oxen with vegetables and fruit and walk them through the town. Also the few tractors that venture into those mountains and the jeeps to bring down the crops. The horses go last with their elegant steps and their plump riders. The mass is beautiful, full of faith and with the image of the saint where an angel stops with the oxen. The miracle that everyone recognizes in San Isidro. Then they take him out and parade him through the town. They say that in the afternoon everyone returns home because the rain comes and cleans the town. Being there is like assimilating faith. Sharing the emotion. Thanking all these people for continuing in the fields, in such a sacrificial job, to feed an entire country. Do you know the craziest thing? That the people of Timotes do not eat vegetables.
