“I just want the best for my bees,” says Ante Hamersmit. And for him, that means beehives. He isn’t interested in the honey his bees produce, but rather in their homes. And on that point, 43-year-old Ante has made his position very clear: In his opinion, it’s the hives that allow the bees to build their combs most naturally. He became interested in insects through macro photography and eventually turned his attention to bees. Since then, he has been building beehives out of rye straw and rattan. The most traditional form of these dome-shaped hives is the Lüneburg “Stülper,” which has made its way from the heathland beekeeping tradition to the southwest. The engineer and manager, who runs his own company, is fascinated by what people have been able to create with their hands. He puts a lot of passion and work into his beehives: it takes him up to four days to weave a single hive. He also shares his expertise in workshops, because he is determined to ensure that this craft is not lost.
