UNA ALDEA DE 80 PERSONAS 😨 PÁRAMO LOS CONEJOS, MÉRIDA ❄️ Valen de Viaje

How do 80 people live in a remote village at 3,400 meters above sea level, in a moor called Los Conejos, in the state of Mérida? Surrounded by mountains with stone monuments, lagoons inhabited by enchantments, this place can only be reached by mule and walking for five hours, or in a four-wheel drive car on the most difficult road that existed, where it takes five hours to travel just 23 kilometers. Despite these conditions, they have managed to get water with hoses that come directly from springs in the mountains, which allows them to drink it without the need for treatment. In addition, they have electricity 24 hours a day thanks to solar panels and windmills. Is it perhaps this geography, adorned by hairy frailejones, rivers that cross it, forests of small trees with purple flowers and lots of medicinal plants, that determines the strength of its inhabitants? That is the story we are going to tell you. We arrived at the village of Cañada de las González – that is what it is called – and we found ourselves in an immense valley, where the houses are miles apart from each other. However, it is a united community, where everyone is family, they love each other, they help each other and they solve their problems together. They support each other by bringing food from Mérida and they never miss a party, because each one knows that the other is waiting for them. One day we toured this village, we talked with its people, we marveled at their stories and we raved about its landscape. We spent time with Chencho and his grandson Gilbert in the home that they converted into an inn. We arrived at the house of Rosario, the teacher, and we continued on our way with her and her two children. We saw the machine that has been abandoned for six years, the same one that allowed them to repair the road and receive more tourists. We learned that there was a time when many people visited the village, but not anymore, because getting there is a feat and, in addition, the trout that visitors caught have disappeared, since they can no longer get the food to raise them. We experienced solidarity among the 80 inhabitants. We learned how they solve their lives. We fell in love with each one of them and understood that geography determines strength. That living in these moors makes you noble and strong, because you only have yourself and your surroundings. You learn to admire and value the tranquility, the silence. And you understand that living here is a privilege that requires strength and will. What is it like to live in the Los Conejos moor? Why is it called Los Conejos? How did those people get to that valley and why did they stay? That is what we discovered and what we want to tell you.
