He later appeared in A Certain Smile (A Bitter Smile), starring Rossana Brazzi and Joan Fontaine, and Timbuktu (Hawk of the Desert), starring Victor Mature and Yvonne De Carlo. With around 20 films, he made a name for himself in Europe and the US. He was the wealthy, self-serving, and evil man of Yeşilçam films. New generations recognized Çölgeçen as the lonely, wealthy, usurer Übeyit Bey in "The King of the Doorkeepers." His father, Bahri Bey, served in both the Ottoman Chamber of Deputies and the Turkish Grand National Assembly—as a Member of Parliament for Ankara. Because he was a naval officer, he was also known as Bahriyeli Bahri. He lived in an old mansion in Rumelihisarı – an inheritance from Feridun Çölgeçen. Feridun Çölgeçen was the aunt's son of the famous star Belgin Doruk and a graduate of Galatasaray High School. He also attended the State Conservatory in Ankara, but failed to graduate and left unfinished. He attended theater courses in Belgium, France, and Germany. He taught French and worked as a civil servant at the Central Bank. Çölgeçen began his artistic career in theater and worked as a supporting actor in over four hundred films. He made his film debut in a supporting role in "Cici Berber," directed by Muhsin Ertuğrul in 1933. He became a professional theater artist in 1935 with "Taskless Buseler" (Buses Without a Target) for the Raşit Rıza troupe. He performed at the Nejat Uygur Theater. According to Belgin Doruk's memoirs, Feridun Çölgeçen was a natural-born thespian. He lived with his family on the upper floor of the same house. He would take the papers with his role in the play in his hand and repeat them out loud. He would immerse himself in his work like a madman. Despite not earning any money, he took his work very seriously and would work for hours without a break. The house was filled with precious antiques. When he ran out of money, he would sell his valuables. Although he married twice, he had no children. He loved cats and dogs and was always by his side. People who saw him hurriedly walk down the street would curiously ask, “Where are you going, Feridun Baba?” He would always point to the net in his hand and say, “Shopping.” In his spare time from filming, he would stop by the Beşiktaş Market to buy liver for his cats and dogs. He would fill the large net with liver and cat food and head to the mansion in Rumelihisarı. Known by the locals as “Cat Grandpa,” he would gather all the stray cats and dogs indiscriminately and feed them until his purchases were gone. Çölgeçen's animal-loving side was also mentioned in an article by Hikmet Feridun Es, a renowned journalist of the time. According to one account, he acted in 250 films, and according to another, around 400. He was extremely witty and talkative. He was always the center of attention in his circle with his engaging anecdotes. He was interested in everyone's problems and shared his feelings with them. In his book "Ask Me About Yeşilçam," Öztürk Serengil talks about Feridun Çölgeçen as follows. The late Feridun Çölgeçen was Turkish cinema's greatest gossipmonger. From the oldest to the youngest, he would gossip about every artist, director, or producer. But he would pass the first gossip on to his beloved Hürrem Erman. This way, Hürrem Erman would receive the latest market news and keep Yeşilçam under some control. Afterward, Çölgeçen would pass the news he produced as a second opinion to other famous artists he wanted to flatter. I know many producers who gave Feridun Çölgeçen work out of fear of being gossiped about... Çölgeçen was also Yeşilçam's only intellectual artist. He spent his youth in Paris and spoke fluent French. He was a man of incredible persuasiveness and an exceptionally likeable personality. He once introduced the so-called "bobstil" (bobstil) trend. He was the first man to bring it to Türkiye. He later went to America, where he played both large and small roles in films for many years. Ahmet Tank Tekçe came in second place as an expert in gossip, and Salih Tozan came in third. However, none of them were as accomplished as Çölgeçen. One day, while working on the set, my dear father said, "If they want to save the world from the Russians, there's no need for atoms or other measures. Let them send these three men to Moscow. With their gossip, they'll turn the nation against each other within 15 days, destroy it from within, and destroy it to the ground." An article in İstanbul Sesi magazine on October 1, 1958: "Feridun Çölgeçen, the silver screen and stage artist well-known to Turkish audiences, is now receiving great praise in Hollywood. United Artists has returned to Hollywood to continue the interior scenes of its film "Timbuktu" after completing the exterior scenes in the deserts around Kanab, Utah. The scrip...
