Join me at Kidderminster Town on the Severn Valley Railway as we take in a fascinating mix of steam, diesel and visiting locomotives following the 2026 SVR Summer Steam Gala. The video begins with two of the gala’s guest locomotives departing the railway by road. Kerr Stuart ‘Witch’ Class No. 4388, built in 1926, leaves on a low loader after delighting visitors with its distinctive appearance, featuring outside cylinders, no front footplate and a remarkably small saddle tank. My thanks go to Jack Dibnah, the Foxfield Railway, and Footplate of Kidderminster for making the locomotive’s visit possible and sponsoring the road haulage. Also departing by road is Hunslet Works No. 3783, better known today as Hollybank No. 3. Built in 1953 for the National Coal Board as Darfield No. 1, the locomotive enjoyed a long industrial career before entering preservation in 1975. Since 2012 it has carried the identity of the original Hollybank No. 3 and is now based at the Chasewater Railway. Sadly, due to a fault before the event, Hollybank was unable to haul trains during the gala and instead spent the weekend on static display at Kidderminster Town before making the journey home. The action continues with one of the most unusual combinations seen on the SVR, as GWR 5700 Class Pannier Tank No. 7714 double-heads with BR Class 20 No. 20048 on a 9-coach service to Bridgnorth. Watching this 1930-built Great Western pannier tank working alongside the unmistakable English Electric “Chopper” makes for a memorable sight and sound. The video also captures the pair shunting into position before departure from Kidderminster. Built by Kerr Stuart in 1930, 7714 is one of just 16 surviving members of the famous GWR 5700 Class. After a long career on the Great Western Railway and British Railways, followed by industrial service at Penallta Colliery, it entered preservation in 1973 and has become one of the Severn Valley Railway’s most reliable resident steam locomotives. Alongside the steam action, BR Class 20 No. 20048, built by English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry in 1959, continues to demonstrate why the class earned the nickname “Choppers”, thanks to its distinctive engine beat. Originally numbered D8048, the locomotive has enjoyed a varied preservation career and has been based on the SVR since 2022. Diesel enthusiasts are also treated to the unmistakable sound of BR Class 52 D1062 “Western Courier” as it works a passenger service from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth. Built at Crewe Works in 1963, this iconic Western diesel-hydraulic travelled over one million miles during its British Rail career before entering preservation. Now a long-standing resident of the Severn Valley Railway, D1062 remains one of the railway’s most popular diesel locomotives. Another diesel highlight sees BR Class 46 No. 46045 (D182) departing Kidderminster with a service to Bridgnorth. Built at Derby Works in 1962, this member of the famous “Peak” family has become a familiar sight on the SVR following several visits before joining the home fleet. Steam is also represented by the charming GWR Saddle Tank No. 813, which is seen arriving from Bridgnorth before departing once again on its return working. Originally built in 1900 by Hudswell Clarke for the Port Talbot Railway, 813 is now the oldest operational locomotive on the Severn Valley Railway. Despite its small size, it has become one of the line’s most dependable engines and returned to traffic in late 2025 following the construction of a brand-new saddle tank and a full repaint into Great Western livery. This video captures a wonderful variety of traction at one of Britain’s premier heritage railways—from industrial guest locomotives and Great Western steam to classic BR diesel power—all centred around the busy atmosphere of Kidderminster Town.
