Little & Large | Severn Valley Railway - Spring Steam Gala 2026 - 17-19/04/26

Two extremes in sizes headline the Severn Valley Railway's 2026 Spring Steam Gala, with one of UK preservation's largest and smallest steam locomotives in attendance. Dominating the scene was sole built BR Standard Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester', making its first gala appearance since returning to steam last year. 71000 was one of the largest BR Standard locomotives to be built, and is one of only two surviving locomotives in preservation to be fitted with Caprotti valve gear. Not to be overshadowed by the 'Duke' was Port of Par 0-4-0ST 'Judy', one of two saddle tanks built by W.G.Bagnall for Par Docks, with tight corners and a low bridge contributing to the short wheelbase and low hight for these locomotives. Another smaller engine was Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 0-4-0ST Pug 11243; Another locomotive design synonymous with dockyards and industry, this time in the North West. Both 'Judy' and the Pug would operate shuttles between Kidderminster and Bewdley throughout the event, being joined by 71000 on the Sunday morning for an incredibly unique pairing. Alongside the little and large trio was a wide verity of the Severn Valley's home fleet, including GWR Port Talbot 813 being freshly repainted back into 'Great Western' livery, paired appropriately with the loco group's GWR freight set on the Sunday. Sadly, GWR Autotank 1450 would be pulled from service on the Saturday morning, replaced by BR Class 17 Clayton D8568.
